Question I want to communicate HMI and other vendor’s sensors by Modbus RTU protocol. HMI should set as Master and sensors should be slaves. How can I make the configuration and set the communication parameters?

1. Modbus communication setting
At first, communication setting in the XP-builder should be done. For that you should check the ‘maker‘(Schneider Electric Industries) and ‘product’(Modbus RTU Maker) like below. It depends on the slave’s supported protocol. If ‘Detail Settings’ is clicked, you can set the basic communication setting like baud rate, data bit, stop bit, parity bit, etc.

2. Slave’s station number
For the communication among the many Modbus RTU slaves, HMI drawing in XP-builder is important. Especially addressing is a part that needs attention. When RS-422 of RS-485 is used for the Modbus RTU, 1(master):N(slaves) communication is possible to set. Therefore, you should write the ‘#’ and ‘station number:’ in the first part of the address. For example, if you want to set bit switch which station number is 4, the object’s address should start with ‘#4:’.

3. Modbus address setting
So, station number is the first part to take care for the addressing. In addition, Modbus address assignment rule is important. Each address within data starts from 0, and is identical to the MODBUS address subtracted with 1. That is, MODBUS address 2 corresponds to data address 1. Before you allocate the address please check the slave’s address map as well.
